The big idea:

 Diagnostic tool to rapidly trap and identify viruses using a laser beam and a detector

How it works:

Uses a technique called Raman spectroscopy to identify viruses by shining a light on a disposable cartridge

Samples from oral cotton swabs or a person blowing through the device

Spectrometer measures the interatomic vibrations - Each virus has its own signature vibrations

Identification takes less than two minutes

Accuracy rate of up to 70% to 90%

Build reliable prototypes that can be scaled up for mass production

Available to anyone visiting their family doctor

Available at hospitals, airports and inside commercial aircraft

Enable pandemics to be recognized early in the future:

Swiss researchers of the Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Science and Technology Empa have developed a new corona sensor device to detect the corona virus in the air.

In the future, the sensing device could be used in train stations, airports, hospitals or places where there are many people. The sensor is extremely sensitive and detects virus particles that come into contact with the sensor. The new device can clearly differentiate between viruses.

For example, the researchers exposed the sensor to corona viruses and Sars viruses, which triggered an epidemic in 2003. The device recognized the difference, as the researchers report. 

But the new sensor is probably too late for the spread of the corona virus. Because the device will only be available in a year. By then, the corona pandemic will likely have flattened out. 

The sensor will most likely be able to detect also other type of viruses in the future and thus detect future pandemics and help to stop.

Swiss coalition set to address shortage of protective masks:

A team of scientists and engineers at Coat-X SA, INVENesis SARL and R&D of Philip Morris International in Neuchâtel, Switzerland trying to find solutions to the global shortage of protective masks against the coronavirus based on readily available fabrics and also to improve the performance of conventional masks.

Looking for an easy and fast PECVD process recipe to deposit a water-repellent thin-film coating on these fabrics.

They have made interesting progress to find a highly hydrophobic coating for a huge variety of commercially available fabrics for mask fabrication. The coating can help to make hydrophilic fabrics like paper strongly hydrophobic comparable to surgical or FFP2/FFP3 masks.

The performance of the coating is now being tested by the University of Neuchâtel, the University of Geneva and the Swiss research and technology organization CSEM.

Speed-up the recovery of ventilated patients:

Severe cases of COVID-19 require intensive care and mechanical ventilation with an average duration of 12 days. Moreover, liberating patients from mechanical ventilation takes time and ties up staff resources. To help speed up the time to the recovery of patients in intensive care, STIMIT developed a breathing stimulation device to enable faster recovery through diaphragm stimulation.

The solution is backed by a technology that can non-invasively activate the body's own breathing function. The goal of the therapy is to maintain the breathing muscle function during ventilation, minimize life-threatening damage to the lungs from mechanical ventilation, and shorten the duration of ventilation for intensive-care patients.


The company was founded 2018 and is based in Nidau, Switzerland.

The company HeiQ has leveraged its more than 15 years in textile products to launch HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03, an antiviral and antimicrobial textile treatment designed with a unique combination of vesicle and silver technologies to inhibit the growth and persistence of bacteria and viruses.

According to a HeiQ press release:

The treatment has proven to be effective against human coronavirus in face mask testing, significantly enhancing the antiviral log reduction from 2.90 of untreated face masks to 4.48, over 99.99% reduction of virus infectivity.
